In Conversation with Laura Ballin
For this edition of ‘In Conversation’ we welcome Laura Ballin, founder of ODE TO SÉLF, part naturopathy practice anchored to the notion of women coming home to themselves and part natural perfumery with therapeutic intention and desire to spark moments of self connection. With Laura on the cusp of transitioning into motherhood we offer a moment of reflection, from what applying her naturopathic lens has entailed through conception, pregnancy and looking forward to postpartum to what these in-between moments have looked like, welcoming in a slow and steadiness.
What initially drew you to naturopathy and what dreams do you have for your practice heading into the future?
I'd actually never heard of a Naturopath until a couple of years prior to studying! After dealing with debilitating symptoms with little relief from standard care, I looked into holistic avenues and Naturopathy just made sense, and helped. Here I am a decade later, going into my fifth year of practice. The future of ODE TO SÉLF is to continue focusing on supporting women to come home to themselves and improve their health without restriction or overwhelm. I envision more specialised offerings, events and collaborations with other practitioners (once I'm back from mat leave of course!).
Can you speak to how your role as a naturopath influenced your conception journey and what you'll carry into your postpartum period?
I could speak to this so much! Of course knowledge in nutrition and reproductive health was helpful for conception, however I'm always telling my clients that fertility encompasses so much more than this, and is definitely much more than taking a prenatal supplement. Preparing ourselves emotionally and enjoying + surrendering to the journey was our biggest focus, and will continue to be throughout postpartum.
Over the past five years, what new belief, behaviour, or habit has had the most positive impact on your life?
The solidification of the belief that achieving good health is so much more than just diet, supplements and exercise. Leaning into the simple pleasures of life and spending time learning how to honour our unique body is just as therapeutic to our health, if not more so.
What are the days in your last trimester looking like?
Slow and steady, with a touch of manic nesting.
What’s one piece of advice you’d tell your younger self?
Look after you first, little Laura; the rest will follow, and you will find your way.
When and where are you happiest?
At home with myself, husband and pets. They are my home and make me so happy.
What is your greatest extravagance?
Building our perfume studio. Although necessary, it very much feels like my biggest extravagance!
The first thing you do when you wake up in the morning?
I feel this little love wiggle around in my belly, before a snuggle with either my cat, dog or husband - whoevers closest! Safe to say my love language is physical affection.
Words or a motto you live by?
You are your home; go gently.
